Extended Hands Foundation in Partnership with SNEPCo/NNPC Carries Out Repair Surgeries on 20 Women with VVF

In an effort to spread the word on the dangers of Vesico Vaginal Fistula and to repair as many women as possible who have the condition, the Extended Hands Foundation with support from SNEPCo/NNPC recently carried out repair surgeries on 20 women at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The pool effort was done to bring hope and restoration to the women who had been living with this condition for varying period of time. The women had the repair surgeries done at no cost to them and their families.

Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) is a serious disability that can be experienced by women after childbirth. They are holes resulting from the breakdown in the tissue between the vaginal wall and the bladder or rectum caused by unrelieved obstructed labour. The consequence of such damage is a woman’s inability to control the flow of urine or faeces. It occurs more often in young women during childbirth, as their bodies are not yet mature for the process.

The exercise which kicked off in June was a very successful one. The team of doctors carried out repair surgeries on 20 women whose lives had been adversely affected by this condition and it was so heart warming to restore hope and a chance at living normal lives to these women.

Aside from the surgeries, the foundation also donated surgical equipment and electrical supplies which was presented to the hospital at an event which took place at the hospital. 

In attendance was the Chief Medical Director of UCH Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge; Head of Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Professor Ayo Arowojodu and the Chief Medical Consultant, Department of Genitourinary & Urogynaecology Professor O. A. Ojengbede.

"What do we really think of the female anatomy? Ugly? Pretty? Sexy? Smelly? Alien?

I personally think it's a pretty grim part of the body, yet men seem to love it, and a lot of girls too.

For those of us not so enamoured with the way it looks, there is now a unique treatment to basically neaten up the fun box without going under the knife – great news for those of us who have had kids and have never really looked the same down there since.

I discovered it three weeks ago and at first I was sceptical about writing about it, but one or two of us have fannies so it's not like it's a taboo subject.

Lots of women I know have badly suffered from post natal fanny disorder, i.e they cant bear to look down there after having babies.

It's a horrifying feeling and I empathise with anyone who has given birth naturally and thinks that the thought of touching or looking down there might just put them off sex or pregnancy for life.

I've never had an issue with mine as such, but I remember taking a shower after having my baby, having a peek and wanting to ring the police not a doctor. It did seem like a real life horror scene.

Anyhow, things thankfully did pop back into place, but I know for some women, that's not always the case.

Although mine hasn't ever caused me any issues, I have seen and purposely looked at other lady bits out there on the internet (bit odd I know) and obviously I've seen them on programmes and from some of my more flashy friends.

Thankfully everything seems in tact and nothing is too dangly, long or short – but even so, after finding I could make my flower a little prettier I decided to give it a whirl, why not, I was at a loose end. (No pun intended!)

But before I dropped my kecks, I checked out what was involved.

The nurse at the reputable Pureskin clinic in Alderley Edge ran through the whole procedure, and although I kept thinking "WTF am I doing", I signed a form and off we went.

I think I am one of the first women in the UK to have the Intima treatment, but like with most things, I thought it might be just the latest treatment to flog to naive girls (like me, I guess).

For once, I was wrong. During my first treatment the nurse explained how my bits would basically pukka up – the treatment would smooth the right areas, shrink the labia and tighten up the entrance area too. Bloody perfect.

I did a before and after selfie – the weirdest I've ever taken – and hey ho, there was actually a difference. It shrank the giblety bits and almost makes you look virginal again. Almost.

Like the L'Oreal advert for youthful skin that tightens all those wrinkles, only not for your face, for your flange.

It also improves sex apparently, not that I'm looking for improvements, but I'm yet to see if it does make a difference. Let's wait and see.

This probably sounds as ridiculous to you as it did do to me, but three treatments in and I can't wait to complete the process which takes another five sessions.

Lying there like a frog with my legs akimbo while my nurse chats happily away to me about what she's had for tea is a strange experience at first but gets more relaxing.

For women who have lost or who are lacking a sex drive because they're afraid their vagina looks like a car crash, it's one answer to get the bed springs squeaking again.

Couples do break up through the lack of sex in their lives. I've had friends who have been on the tip of the iceberg, ready to crumble because they can't and won't give their men sex after childbirth or because they're paranoid about what downstairs looks like – or appears to look like in a girl's own mind.

I'm not just saying this because I am a girl (ready for the "you're a man Helen" jokes, standard) but it is a pain in the a**e being a female at times – so much pressure when it comes to appearance.

I'm not saying this treatment is for all, I just love to try new things out and would definitely recommend if it means couples get some good ole hanky panky back in their lives."

"Why do you keep moving from one radio station to the other?

When you look at a résumé of a radio presenter, it is usually a two-year thing. You wouldn’t want to take somebody who has been at one radio station for 15 years. He has no experience. You would want to get a resume that says someone has been to this station and that station. You want somebody who has wide experience at variety of places. Eight years at Cool FM was way too long in one place. I went to Inspiration FM and now City FM. In fact, I am almost set to move again unless something comes up. It is like being in the military. Some people might look at it as not being stable but they don’t understand the nature of the business. They don’t know what that person is branding or setting up. But then, I am even for the highest bidder. I sign a two-year contract. If you can beat the contract, I am available.

You host a new radio show, what is it about?

It is called Let’s Go Naija. It is for Nigerians and for everybody in Nigeria. It is a programme that highlights the great things Nigerians are doing. It talks about health. Take for instance the Ebola issue, we always have a theme on the show. 

It is a unique show that focuses on the testimony of things that young Nigerians are doing to help conserve and save energy and things they are doing to take the country to the next level. 

There is another part which I like. It is called the Unknown Countdown. It is a platform for artistes who are unknown to send in their musical materials which we play. 

Some artistes have been sending some great materials to us. The unique part of the show is the chemistry between Bella Rose Okojie and me. She is my co-presenter and she is so good. She is my pidgin Naija sister. 

It is an hour music show with people calling and sending shout outs to their loved ones. It is on seven different stations throughout Nigeria.

How did you get the job in Nigeria?

I put my best radio stuff on the Internet and I learnt that VI wanted me. I actually thought it was Virgin Island where I had worked before then. But it was Victoria Island in Lagos. I got the mixed up. Chris Obosi had contacted me from Cool FM for my tape that I had put out on the Internet. I had got hits all over when I put my stuff on the internet. So I came down in 2000 when I finally made up my mind that this is where I wanted to be.

Do you have regrets coming down here?

The only regret I had was that in 1999, I had a son in the US. I had to go to my dad and I told him, ‘Dad, I think I like my job more than being married now. I would do anything for that job but then, I just met this woman and she just had a baby for me.’ He is now 16. I was mad at him last year. My ex sent me some of his pictures and I knew he was doing drugs. He had everybody fooled as if he was a cool kid. I feel so guilty because I am sitting here making all the money and I didn’t spend time with him. You have to spend time with your kids or you would lose them. Sometimes I would call him and he wouldn’t have anything to say. I would ask him how he was doing and he would just say ‘fine.’ I would scold him and tell him to say something more than one word. I would tell him to ask me questions and he would say he didn’t know what to say.

Did you ever smoke weed?

Yes. I remember one time I smoked weed and my father came in and asked me, ‘what is that stupid look on your face? You must have been smoking that stupid stuff because you look so stupid!’ I never smoked it again. But I was even 18. But my son was 14 when he started smoking weed. I was so pissed with his mum because she didn’t even know what he was doing. Now, I am trying to get his head together and make sure he does well in school. My only pain is that I needed to have been there for this kid. But I have three kids now and I love them to death.
