BBC Hausa Women’s Writing Contest 2018 - now open!

The BBC Hausa short story writing competition is now open for entries from all women writing in Hausa, irrespective of their nationality or experience.

Entries must be engaging works of fiction on any topic and should be between 1000 to 1500 words. A panel of judges will select one winner and two runners-up.

Jimeh Saleh, Editor of the BBC Hausa Service, says: “Since launching it two years ago, the competition has provided a platform for budding and established women writers to showcase their creativity and share their stories. We had over 400 entries last year and the stories had unique and fascinating perspectives on the daily challenges women face especially in Hausa communities.”

Last year’s edition of the annual contest was won by Maimuna Sani Beli. The panel of judges termed her idea about exploration of life after death as bold and creative.
Maimuna Sani Beli said:

“Up to this period, whenever I remember that moment when I was informed of my emergence as the winner of the BBC Hausa Short Story Writing Contest for Women, I smile to myself. Even though I was known as a fiction writer, I was only known within a narrow circle of the reading public that had read my books. But now anywhere I go and I mention my name people recognise me as the BBC Heroine.  Winning this competition has opened a lot of doors for me in the world of fiction writing.”

The first edition was won by “Sansanin ’Yan Gudun Hijira”, a story narrating the plight of the victims of the Boko Haram crisis.

Entries are to be submitted to labari.bbchausa@bbc.co.uk by midnight July 8 2018.

BBC Hausa audience will be able to hear a selection of the stories on air in the coming months. The winner and two runners up will each receive a cash prize and plaque at a special awards night in the first week of  October in Abuja.

Details of how to enter and the full terms and conditions are available on bbchausa.com.

Ambode launch of the C40 Climate Action Planning Africa Programme

C40’s Climate Action Planning Africa Programme will provide direct support to the 9 African cities in developing unprecedented, robust and evidence-based long-term climate action plans that align with the ambitious objectives of the Paris Agreement. The support will include a dedicated city advisor based in each city, a series of workshops, and access to expert technical advice as needed. Nairobi and Abidjan have also joined the programme and are anticipated to submit their climate action commitments soon.

It once again proves that cities are getting the job done and concretely delivering on the Paris Agreement to secure a bright future for all our citizens.”

BBC Launches Africa Eye - a new TV investigations strand for Africa..

Africa Eye – a new documentary strand from the BBC has launched with an in-depth investigation into the plague of addiction to cough mixture across Nigeria.

The new strand will deliver up to 20 original and high-impact investigations from across Africa every year.

Nisha Kapur, Commissioning Editor for TV said: “Africa Eye will promote the culture of investigative journalism across Africa and strengthen the skills of African investigative journalists. All of the programmes will be based on in-depth reporting that holds power to account. They will tackle topics that are of intense interest and concern to audiences in Africa. These reports will be produced in a fresh and contemporary style that resonates with young audiences."

The new strand is part of the BBC’s commitment to invest in original content for Africa in English, French, Swahili and Hausa languages as part of the expansion of the BBC World Service.  Africa Eye will create a network of trained investigative journalists across the continent - within BBC Africa, among the BBC’s partner organizations on the continent. They will also work with independent journalists.  Each episode will be 30 minutes to an hour long.

The first - a co-production between Africa Eye and BBC Pidgin - will look at the cough syrup industry and how Codeine is causing a plague of addiction across Nigeria  - hooking millions of young people.

In an exclusive undercover investigation, Africa Eye, will reveal senior figures in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry who are moving their legally produced products via the back door of their factories and into the hands of drug dealers who sell the dangerously addictive, sweet tasting opioid for the price of a bottle of cola.

With access to Nigeria's crack anti-drug squads, BBC Pidgin journalist Ruona Meyer, whose brother has struggled with cough syrup addiction, is on a journey to unravel the secrets of the syrup plague....and to expose the criminals behind it.

Codeine cough syrup can now be bought in the heaving nightclubs of Lagos and on the ancient backstreets of Kano. Three million bottles are drunk every day in Nigeria's north alone, according to a recent Nigerian government report.

Adejuwon Soyinka, Editor of the BBC Pidgin who went undercover said, “it’s shocking what we found and how much of an epidemic cough syrup abuse has become in Nigeria. Equally shocking is the sheer size of criminal network involved in the illicit trade.”

The episodes are available from midnight on 30th April on

BBC NEWS CELEBRATES OFFICIAL OPENING OF LAGOS BUREAU

The BBC today officially opened its new bureau in Lagos, home to three new services in Igbo, Pidgin, and Yoruba. The bureau boasts a new state-of-the-art TV studio and two radio studios and can house up to 200 people.
The BBC’s investment in Nigeria has created over 100 new jobs in Lagos and means that BBC News is now available in five languages across Nigeria (Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa and English). This comes as part of the biggest expansion of the BBC World Service since the 1940s.

The BBC will also invest in the region further by launching a mentorship and internship scheme for the next generation of West African journalists, Jamie Angus, Director of the BBC World Service, announced at the launch event for the bureau.
Jamie Angus said:
“It’s wonderful to be here to open this bureau, which will be the headquarters for our operation across West Africa. It will be a beacon for our journalism and as such I am delighted to announce our mentorship and internship scheme for up-and-coming journalists. This is part of BBC’s contribution to the growth of media best practice and professionalism in Nigeria, and the fight against ‘Fake News’ – and we’ll benefit from the young journalists’ insight into West Africa.

“The World Service delivers accurate, impartial and independent news to all countries. We spot the stories, see the patterns and make sense of your world. We promise to remain your most trusted source of news in the years to come.”

The bureau is led by the BBC’s Head of West Africa, Oluwatoyosi Ogunseye. She said:
“It’s a great honour to be part of this expansion and I’m so proud to be leading the teams in Nigeria. We will big on original journalism that impacts the lives of Nigerians at home and abroad. We are expanding our editorial offer to cover politics, culture, business, health, investigations, among others.”

“We will focus more on young people and women, ensuring that we cover Nigeria and the whole of West Africa like never before. We’ll remain true to our ideals and values of objectivity, truth and impartiality.”

BBC News in Igbo, Pidgin, and Yoruba reports on stories affecting the lives of audiences across the region, and is available online and on social media. There is also a 60-second audio round-up, BBC Minute, twice daily.

The BBC is also joining forces with Channels Television on Connect Africa, a new weekly half hour programme in English which will launch later this year. This will be a live current affairs show focusing on the stories behind the news, with audience interaction via social media and from a studio audience.

The BBC is launching more new TV programming for Africa later this year in English, Hausa, French and Swahili, and some of the TV teams will join the Lagos bureau. This will include programmes about sports, business, and entertainment, satire, a women’s programme, a programme for 10-16 year olds, and investigative documentaries.

This will offer other local independent producers the chance to be involved in co- productions and BBC commissions.

The BBC’s international news currently has an audience of 36m in Nigeria, the largest of any country.
